1. Mirror Day (sold unframed)
Oil, charcoal and soft pastel on canvas
Painting : 12 x 17cm
Frame : 16 x 21cm
2024
A painting from my ongoing series of plants. Mirror Day was part of a duo of paintings that explored a slightly different process to my usual paintings on fabric. The other painting - Summer Of Love - has sold and is now in a private collection.
I often start a painting by stretching patterned fabric over a wooden frame, however I often change this approach in an attempt to keep my work fresh and to explore new process that might enrich my work.
For this painting, I started by stretching a traditional plain cotton canvas. I then drew into the canvas with high pigment soft pastel, which stained the fabric with a dusty scarlet. I followed this with a charcoal line drawing, then proceeded to paint in oils.
Because the plant pot was now a solid block colour (they are often patterned due to the fabric surface), I decided to create a playful, yet simple pattern for the background, which was mirrored above and below.
I really like this approach, as it allows more detail into the surface of the painting.
